Electric car being charged at a rapid charger in the UK

Five-Minute Charges, Electric Hot Hatches, and a Leasing Market on the Rise: Your Weekly EV and Leasing Update

It has been a busy week in the world of electric cars and leasing. From a charging breakthrough that could make range anxiety a thing of the past, to the return of a legendary hot hatch badge on an all-electric model, and some encouraging news for anyone thinking about leasing in 2026 — here is everything you need to know.

BYD Brings Five-Minute Charging to the UK — and It Could Change Everything

One of the biggest practical objections to electric vehicles has always been charging time. Filling a tank takes five minutes; charging an EV — even on a rapid charger — has historically meant a twenty-minute stop at the very least. That could be about to change in a big way.

On 11 June 2026, BYD demonstrated its FLASH Charging technology in the UK for the very first time, at its headquarters in Uxbridge. The numbers are remarkable: using a 1,500kW charger paired with BYD's latest Blade Battery 2.0, the system can bring a vehicle from five to 70 per cent charge in just five minutes. A full ten to 97 per cent charge takes nine minutes, and even at -30°C in winter conditions, a 20 to 97 per cent charge completes in 12 minutes.

The technology was demonstrated using the Denza Z9 GT — the striking grand tourer that BYD is planning to bring to the UK market later this year. BYD has confirmed plans for 300 FLASH Charging units to be installed at Denza showrooms and other locations by the end of 2026. The system uses on-site battery storage to supply the charging energy, meaning no greater demand is placed on the electricity grid than a conventional rapid charger.

For leasing customers weighing up the switch to electric, this is significant news. Technology like FLASH Charging suggests that within the typical three-year lease term of a vehicle you sign up for today, the public charging landscape could look very different — and very much more convenient.

The Peugeot E-208 GTi Is Back — and It Is Fully Electric

If you grew up dreaming about the Peugeot 205 GTI, prepare yourself. Peugeot has revealed the production-ready E-208 GTi in full, and it is everything the badge promises — just with zero emissions at the tailpipe.

The new electric hot hatch is priced from £34,995, putting it in an increasingly competitive segment alongside the MINI John Cooper Works Electric, the Alpine A290, and the Abarth 600e. In terms of performance, the E-208 GTi punches hard: a 281hp electric motor produces 345Nm of torque, which propels the car from 0 to 62mph in 5.5 seconds, with a limited top speed of 112mph.

Visually, Peugeot has leant firmly into the GTi heritage — think black wheelarches, red pinstripe detailing, bold alloy wheels, and GTi badging that echoes the classic 1980s design. It is a bold statement that electric performance cars can still have genuine character, and it is sure to turn heads on UK roads.

For personal lease customers looking for something a little more exciting than the average family hatchback, the E-208 GTi is well worth watching as it approaches UK showrooms. Lease pricing is yet to be confirmed, but given the competitive electric hot hatch segment and current manufacturer support in the market, we would expect some very attractive personal contract hire rates when they are announced.

UK Leasing Market Surpasses Two Million Vehicles — and Monthly Rates Are Falling

If you have been considering a car or van lease but waiting for the right moment, the current market conditions make a strong case for acting now.

The UK's leased fleet has officially surpassed two million vehicles for the first time, driven by strong growth in business contract hire — up 10% year-on-year — and a remarkable 125% surge in salary sacrifice schemes. It is a clear sign that more businesses are recognising the advantages of leasing, particularly for electric vehicles where Benefit in Kind (BiK) rates remain highly favourable at just 3% for pure electric cars in 2026.

On the pricing front, there is good news for private customers too. Average monthly lease rentals dropped by between 6% and 8% in early 2026, as global supply chains stabilised and manufacturers ramped up support to move stock. Combined with a wider selection of electric models than ever before, it is a genuinely strong time to be looking for a new lease deal.

On the regulatory side, the UK's Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate requires 33% of all new car sales this year to be fully electric, rising steeply in subsequent years. While there is ongoing debate between the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and policymakers about how achievable the targets are, the broader effect for consumers has been positive: manufacturers are working hard to support EV demand with competitive pricing and improved models — which translates directly into better lease deals for customers.

Van customers should also note that the ZEV Mandate now requires 24% of new vans sold to be zero-emission in 2026. If your business fleet includes light commercial vehicles, the range of electric van options available on lease has expanded considerably, with models from Volkswagen, Ford, Vauxhall, Peugeot, and Mercedes-Benz all offering competitive electric variants.
