Tyre pressure and tread
During winter, the cold temperatures can have a big impact on a car's tyres, affecting their performance and safety. This is why it is essential to regularly check and maintain your tyres during the winter months to ensure optimal driving conditions. Here are 2 things to check and maintain.
1. Tread depth
Make sure the tread depth on your tyres is in good condition. The legal tread depth for your tyres is 1.6 millimetres. Experts recommend you should get your tyres replaced when they are in between 2mm and 3mm.
2. Tyre pressure
Cold weather has a big impact on tyre pressure. Tyres with low pressure are more likely to deflate quicker, so it's important to monitor your tyre pressure with regular monthly checks.
Car Battery
Cold winter temperatures can slow the chemical reactions inside your car battery, reducing its ability to hold a charge. This can result in a dead battery. To help with this, charge your battery weekly, especially if it’s older than three years. Use a voltmeter to check that your battery reads at least 12.4 volts; if it drops below that, it's time to recharge.
For optimal winter performance, keep your car’s battery connections clean and secure.
Engine oil and coolant levels
Regularly checking and refilling your car’s fluid levels is essential for smooth engine operation in winter. Check the coolant monthly and ensure it’s a 60/40 antifreeze-water mix.
Also, check the engine oil every two weeks to ensure it’s within the recommended range. Use the manufacturer’s recommended lighter oil for cold weather to prevent engine damage. Proper fluid levels help maintain performance and prevent freezing
